amanda it was the last week of school, and my best friend, edna, and i were eating lunch and talking about—what else—high school. we were nervous that we d finally be moving from eighth grade to senior high the next fall. but we were worried about the classes, the rules, meeting new kids—all the things we d be dealing with for the first time. i was afraid that some of my friends and i would be separated from each other because of all the changes. when i talked this to edna, she said she was feeling the same thing, too. "we probably won t have the same classes," i told her. "i just don t want to be away from each other." she put out her little finger to hook with mine. "that won t happen if we恭罚多核鼙姑俄太藩咖 don t let it. let s promise that starting high school won t change our relationship. no matter what!" i smiled back. "i promise. no matter what, we ll watch out for each other. nothing will come between us." edna the first week of high school turned out to be great. so that saturday night, i invited amanda and another girlfriend, plus three of my guy friends, over to my house on lake conway to celebrate our first week as freshmen. "who wants to go swimming?" i asked. everyone had brought their suits and boogie boards, and i was eager to get this party going. a bright moon reflected on the water, and gentle waves lapped up onshore. one of the guys looked out over the lake. "hey, edna . . . is it safe? are there alligators in there?" i laughed. "my family s lived on this lake for years, and we go swimming and boating all the time. i ve never seen a single gator. come on . . . let s all race out to the middle!" amanda "i m on the swim team, so i m gonna win," i called out as i dashed into the water, my boogie board under my arm. that got everybody laughing and racing into the lake. i kicked like crazy, but one of the guys kept grabbing my foot. "hey, that s cheating," i laughed, trying to push him away. "i guess you can t win fair and square." it was hard to keep paddling when we were laughing so hard. edna zipped ahead-and as i got back on my board, i saw her near the middle of the lake, waiting for everyone to catch up. edna when everyone made it to the middle of the lake, we just hung out there on top of our boards, letting our arms and legs float. this feels so good, i thought, as i looked up at the millions of stars in the clear night sky. just then, i felt something pull my leg. "very funny!" i shouted. i figured one of the guys was joking around. but no one came to the surface. nah, there aren t any gators in here. . . . my eyes glanced around in the darkness, but the only movement i saw was the splashing of my friends, who were yards away from me. whooooosh! something held me on my upper left arm. before i knew what hit me, i was being dragged underwater. a gator! the pressure on my arm was unbelievable. i tried anxiously to pull away-but the alligator was too powerful. it started rolling over and over in the water, dragging me right around with it. i could hear my arm bones breaking as we turned round. he s biting my arm off! please, god, help me! i m going to die!
