阅读教学离不开阅读技巧的教授，其中浏览（Scanning）和略读（Skimming），是让学生懂得如何根据不同的阅读目的的选用不同的阅读方法，例如兴趣阅读（Reading for pleasure）和精读（Reading for detailed
comprehension）就应该采取不同的阅读技巧。
关于阅读教学，Jeremy Harmer还列举了六条原则：
1、阅读并不是一种消极（Passive）技能；
2、应选取学生感兴趣的阅读材料；
3、应鼓励学生注意阅读的内容，而不是语言形式；
4、预测（Prediction）是阅读的一个重要因素；
5、任务(Task
)要与话题（Topic）匹配；
6、优秀教师应该能够深入挖掘阅读材料。
最后，Jeremy
Harmer还通过四个阅读的教学范例阐明应该如何投入练习（Engage exercise）和活动练习（Active exercise）引导学生预测课文内容，并特别强调了阅读的后续活动（Follow-up
activities）的重要性。
