在中国传统的文学观念中，与诗词并列为文学正宗
的,还有另一重要文体,即散文。散文在中国文学史上有
几种不同的概念：①“散文”相对于“韵文”讲，是广
义的,泛指一切无韵的文字。②“散文”相对“骈文”讲，
也是广义的，指那些单行散句，不拘对偶、声律的语文
体，即唐宋以后所称的“古文”。③现代的“散文”概
念则与诗歌、小说、戏剧同为文学体裁之一，包括记叙
散文、抒情散文、报告文学、杂文等样式。为了区别于
古代的“散文”概念，也称文学散文。④单指记叙、抒
情散文，这类散文，有时又称“纯文学散文”。因为中
国作家讲究文采,即使是章表书奏之类应用文字,也决不
苟且为之，而是精心结撰，充盈着浓厚的文学色彩。所
以要概括中国散文的发展线索，应以采用广义的散文概
念为宜，同时又要把握住文学性这一基本特征。
中国文学史上第一部记叙文和论说文的集子是《尚
书》，它是中国上古历史文件和部分追述古代事迹著作
的汇编，其中所收集的大都是一些誓词、政府文告、贵
族的告诫之词以及一些记述文字。据说原有百篇，年代
“上断于尧，下讫于秦”（《汉书·艺文志》）。《尚
书》的文字大都佶屈聱牙，不过已初具文学特质，并略
能叙事。
战国时代，七雄争霸，士人们纷纷著书立说，献计
献策，谟猷筹划,一时间形成了百家争鸣的局面,散文也
在这种时代气氛里迅速地成长起来。首先得到较大发展
的是历史散文和诸子散文。历史散文以《左传》、《国
语》、《战国策》为代表，诸子散文以《孟子》、《庄
子》、《荀子》、《韩非子》为代表。不过，由于儒、
道是中国思想史上的两大流派，所以，《论语》、《孟
子》、《老子》、《庄子》在文学史上的影响是最大的。
这时期的散文基本特点是：①感情激越，论辩性强；②
文章宏丽,辞藻华美,结构谨严；③多用寓言和比喻。到
这时，散文的基本形式已经确定，散文史在这里举行了
隆重的奠基礼。汉代继承了战国时代的散文传统，但更
讲究文采，而且偶句增多，有辞赋化倾向。在进入这个
小高潮的同时，也暗伏着骈文的生机和散文的危机。然
而,正是在汉代,产生了司马迁的《史记》这部巨著，达
到了史传文学的高峰。《史记》“究天人之际，通古今
之变”，规模宏大而又结构精严,无论是写景状物,还是
刻画人物性格、抒情议论,都获得极大成功。因此,《史
记》不仅被视为史书的杰作，而且其传记部分也是中国
传记文学的典范。
骈文兴盛之后，散文式微。直到唐代，韩愈、柳宗
元大力提倡“古文”，反对“连篇累牍，不出月露之形；
积案盈箱，唯是风云之状”的过于矫饰、渐趋空洞的骈
文，散文才重新恢复它的生机与地位。唐宋散文(古文)
基本上直承秦汉的传统，但在杂记文、书信、序等方面
有了长足的进展,尤其是游记散文,更显得清新隽逸、生
动活泼。后世的纯文学散文一直沿着这条轨道前进。明
清的小品文是纯文学散文的一种重要样式，这时期的小
品文吸收了唐代以降游记散文的精髓，又融入了魏晋南
北朝笔记文的谐趣和隽永，具有十分独特的艺术魅力
这种文体，出现很早，至唐宋而大盛。可以记人和事，可以记山川名胜，可以记器物建筑，故又称“杂记”。写法上大多以记述为主，兼有议论、抒情成分。
