　　Australian is a beautiful country, but Australian English is a lot different from American English. It is a non-rhotic language with forty-eight sounds. Twenty of them are vowels and twenty-eight consonants. It also has long vowels and short vowels, but the vowels are different from American vowels. The short vowels are "a, e, i, o, u", but the "a" has two sounds, one of which is longer than the other. The vowel pairs are "ai/ay, ee/ea, oa", but "ai/ay" sounds like "oi/oy". The split vowel pairs are "a-e, e-e, i-e, o-e, u-e", but the "i-e" sound is rounded in some areas and the "u-e" sound is a back vowel. Special vowel pairs are "ou/ow" and "oo". "Ou/ow" is raised in some areas and "oo" has long and short sounds. The r-conrtrolled vowels are "ar, er, ir, or, ur", but "ar" is not rhotic and it is a front vowel. Australian English is so different from American English that you sometimes find it difficult to understand.
