《茶花女》英文读后感
---Book Review: “Camille”
I read the Chinese version of “Camille” a few years ago. At that time I was deeply moved by the main character Marguerite Gautier. “Camille” or “The Lady of the Camellias” by Alexandre Dumas, fils, is the story of Marguerite Gautier, a young courtesan, or kept woman, in Paris in the mid 1800's, and how she falls in love with a young man, Armand Duval, and then tries to escape from her questionable past. Unfortunately, it es back to haunt her and she ends up returning to that life and dies painfully and alone, but with the knowledge that she was a noble woman at heart. When I first began to read the book, I did not care for Marguerite or her attitude or lifestyle, but as I got further into the narrative, I realized that her saucy attitude was a front to cover the lonely woman that she really was. She felt used, abused and unloved, until the gentle Armand Duval came into her life and showed her that he loved her as a person and not for what she could do for him. It must have taken great courage for Marguerite to leave the life she had lived for so long, knowing all along that it was probably too good to be true and would not last indefinitely. And it also showed that Marguerite really loved Armand Duval for she could even change herself for him.
However, happiness didn’t last for long. When M. Duval, Armand's father, came to her, pleading for her to leave Armand to save both Armand's reputation and that of his younger
innocent sister, Marguerite saw a way to bee pure of heart, if not in body. She felt that it was her duty, because she loved Armand so much, to do this even though it meant giving up her own happiness and hurting Armand temporarily. She reluctantly returned to her former life, knowing that some day Armand would forgive her. Sadly, she died in debt and basically alone, except for her one female friend, Julie Duprat, who helped her during her illness. She had her journal sent to Armand after her death, explaining why she had made the choices she had. I think Dumas's last few lines about Marguerite being the exception, not the rule were quite true, and I also agreed with his view that while her lifestyle could not be condoned, we as a society assume that all of these type of women are cold and heartless, while this may not always be the case. A person can make the wrong choices in life when they are young, and try to redeem themselves, but sometimes past
situations prevent them from changing their lives, even though they desperately wish to do so. This applies to both men and women in many different types of circumstances: involvement in crime; drug or alcohol abuse; gambling; prostitution; financial problems; poor marriage choices; etc. And this is the fact, which exists in the whole society.
As far as the other characters in the book, I think Marguerite was right in saying that no one truly cared about her, but only wanted something from her, the only exceptions being Armand and Julie Duprat. Of course, the Comte de G. and Comte de N. wanted her body and appearance. The Duke needed to “wake up and smell the coffee” and realize that she could never replace his dead daughter. If he truly cared, he could have helped her leave her lifestyle without “keeping” her himself. And lastly, Prudence was a blood-sucking leech who used Marguerite almost worse than the men. I also think she was jealous of the fact that Marguerite had so much more courage than herself and someone truly loved her.
Last morning, when tiding my bookshelf, I took this book out of the shelf, and a dried flower flew away from the book. It was pale blue, very transparent, with thin fine veins. a dried flower flew away from the book. It was pale blue, very transparent, with thin fine veins. I held it against the morning light and blew on it. The soft breeze carried it away. Camille is just like the camellia, she could never escape from the destiny of withering. But it wasn’t her fault; it’s because of the evil of Capitalism and the hideousness of that society.
Suddenly, I remembered a saying: “Women are like the flowers”. Those pretty women are like those beautiful flowers; their delicate beauty makes people feel they are the miracle of life. However, even the God envies their beauty. It seems that beautiful women always have tragic endings. As we are normal persons, even we can see the hideousness of humanity that results in their fate of withering, we can at most ask quietly in our hearts: Where have those beautiful flowers gone? Where have they gone?
The Lady of the Camellias
She always wears only camellia. A month, there are tty-five days she wearing white camellia, red camellia with another five days. No one knows the reason why the color change. In Mrs. Bally"s flower shop, she was called La Traviata.
Marguerite Gautier, a prostitute lives in Paris, she had a bad body, accustomed luxury life, seems there should be no true love.
She seemed only have mercial relationship and couldn ”t get true love . They indulge in the luxury of material life, trying to hide and escape from the of ture feelings , but once they met ture love ,they will strive for it. Margaret is such a woman.
Armand seems very like Margaret. In fact, he love the woman very much. But his paranoid
personality let him to the t tragedy last. He seems very firmly pursue the love, but actually very soft. He failed to convince and force against his father. Especially when Marguerite left, and bee others”lover, his Confused. sense and bad action made me very disappointed. He didn't have the courage to pursue their happiness all the time
This paragraph of love from beginning to end without a solid economic foundation, seems to be doomed their tragedy. But I think this is not the main reason, the most important reason is Armand”s cowardly character
作文三:《茶花女 英文读后感》5700字
If I should summarize the story with a minimum of words, the summary would be like that one such courtesan, once in her life, experienced deep love, that she suffered for it and died for it.
Most people have this image of Marguerite as always being sanctity and pure. She used to be a countrywoman, but she came to Paris to earn her bread by prostituting herself. Unfortunately, the extravagant circumstance made she lead her life in luxury. As she indulgent with herself, she still felt and detested the huge void in her life. She was visible still in the virgin stage of vice and anticipated a section of true love---- she knew clearly that those dukes’ love was a mere sham,
what they really wanted was her marvelous face to show how their social statuses are.
Armand’s appearance was evangel to Marguerite. She drew an irresistible attraction to Armand and found out that there would be someone who called to have the latest news of the patient every day during herself was ill, there would be someone who treasure up a fastener that she lost 6 months ago, there would be someone who would love her sincerely. They fall in love. The loved each other to distraction.
Marguerite attained renascence. She got rid of her previous life and braced herself to lead a normal one. Nonetheless, Armand’s father shattered her dream. She was pelled to estrange
herself form Armand, whereas he couldn’t even understand her sacrifice. He subjected
Marguerite to constant persecution till she died.(Armand leave Paris few days before Marguerite fell ill, but the pain he caused wasn’t eased till she die.)
I thought Armand’s father’s selfish caused M’s death, I thought Armand’s envy and vanity
caused M’s death, I thought Blanche, who had a soul that conceives only saintly thoughts, was unaware that in a far country a courtesan had sacrificed her own happiness to the mere mention of her name, should also take the responsibility. I even hope if M could be a little bit selfish, did not think of others too much, the situation would better. Armand said M was as disinterested as the others are grasping. She sure was.
The camellia has withered away.

The Reading Report of Camille
Dumas Alexander fils was a French playwright and novelist, he was one of the founders of the problem play—that is, of the middle-class realistic drama treating
some contemporary ill and offering suggestion for its remedy. Dumas fils, the illegitimate son of Alexander Dumas pere, possessed a good measure of his father’s literary, but the work of the two men could scarcely be more different. His first success was a novel, La Dame aux camelias (1848), but he found his vocation when he adapted the story into a play, known in English as Camille, first performed in 1852. Among his most interesting plays are Le Fils natural and Un Pere prodigue, a dramatization of Dumas’s interpretation of his father’s character.
I read Camille this semester. I was deeply moved by the main character
Marguerite Gautier. Camille Camille or The Lady of the Camellias by Alexander

Reading report of The Lady of the Camellias.
During extracurricular time, I started reading The Lady of the Camellias. It is a very famous book which was written by Dumas, Alexandre, Fils.
Dumas, Alexandre, Fils was born in 1824 in Paris. He was considered as one of the most notable French dramatists of the nineteenth century. He was the illegitimate son of Alexandre Dumas., the author of novels: The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers. And this story is based on the Dumas affair. The name of the hero, Armand Dural, is a thin disguise for the author. Actually, Dumas tells the story in the third person as it was related to him by Armand Duval.
Having read the English version of The Lady of the Camellias which was so attractive that I stayed up late to read this works every night I was deeply moved by the main character Marguerite Gautier for her poor status but noble heart.Let me tell you the first part of the tragic love story between Marguerite Gautier and Armand Duval.
Marguerite Gautier was a young courtesan, in Paris in the mid 19 century. Margaret turned out to be a poor country girl. Then she came to Paris, and began a new career. Because she was very beautiful, lots of boys chase her crazily .She became very famous in that moment and was called “social star” in Paris. Because she always dressed up with a bunch of camellia, she was called "La Traviata".
A courtesan can’t have the true love. But she falls in love with Armand Duval who is a middleclass young man and Armand loved Marguerite very much.
He had nothing more to ask of her. Nevertheless, though she was only a courtesan. He had anticipated for himself. Perhaps he poetize it a little, a hopeless
love, that the nearer the moment approached. It seems that Armand was not handsome or rich or elegant enough to possess such a woman, and he said to himself since they have to part soon, it would be better not to keep her appointed, he thinks, but to write and tell her his fears and leave.
From that he t on to unlimited hope, unbounded confidence. He dreamed incredible dreams of the future that Marguerite’s love should make his happier than all the maidenly loves in the world. Armand said to himself when he was waiting for meeting Marguerite. For Marguerite’s fragile physical state, she moves to the country. There in her new house, a confrontation between the jealous Armand and her rich admires took place. Finally, Marguerite made a choice between Armand and other admirers to show her love to Armand. After that, they lived a period of happy and peaceful life in the country.
However, Armand began to bee depressed for he found that he was not able to support his Marguerite daily life. Marguerite had sold her horses and diamonds for their life secretly…..
Although Armand has given Marguerit lots of money, Marguerit didn’t satisfy. Marguerite needs the money. Armand felt so sorry when he listened it. He was forced to admit that he had no right to ask her anything now and then.
In the last three weeks, the Count G always appeared in her room. Armand had suffered deeply but in parison with what he had suffered that night, he thought that was nothing. One midnight, Armand t to Marguerite’s house and he saw the Count G entered the Marguerite’s house. This made Armand felt very sad. Then he wrote a letter to Margaret and ended this letter with a little inappropriate irony. Armand thought if he met her again, he will left a different impression. She will believed that he will not remember her.
When he want to go, Margaret walked into his house. This made Armand surprised, he begged for her kindness. Margaret told him her the feeling of her heart. After this confession Marguerite forgave him and they have a dinner together.
A few days later, Margaret said that if Armand want to go a real country, they can go to Bougival. Armand agreed with her. One and a half hours later, they arrived in Bougival. They lived in a beautiful house in this country, and had a good time together. They often at night-time sit in the little wood above the house. There they
listened to the cheerful harmonies of evening, both of them thinking of the ing hours which should leave them to one another till the dawn of day. At other times they did not even let the sunlight enter their room. To that succeed a brief sleep, for, disappearing into the depths of their love, they were like two divers who only e to the surface to take breath.
Armand often found her sadly, and scenes of this kind often took place. Although he could not discover their cause, he could not fail to see in Marguerite signs of disquietude in regard to the future. She could not doubt her love, which increased day by day.
Fearing that so monotonous a life was beginning to weary her, he proposed returning to Paris , but she always refused, assuring him that she could not be so happy anywhere as in the country Prudence now came but rarely, but she often wrote letters which he never asked to see. He did not know what to think. Several days later, there came a letter from Prudence, and for a fortnight Marguerite seemed to have got rid of her mysterious gloom, for which she constantly asked his forgiveness, now that it no longer existed. And all the time Marguerite was more joyous and more affectionate than she ever had been.
Not only his love and his dignity would not let him act thus, but he was certain that, feeling as she did now, Marguerite would die rather than accept another lover.
Then Armand’s father wrote a letter to him, which told him that he was about to e and see him. I think Armand had always had a great respect and a sincere affection for his father. He replied that he had been traveling for a short time, and begged his father to let him know beforehand what day he would arrive, so that he could be there to meet him. I think he loved and respected his father very much.
Armand’s father wrote a letter to him, which told him that he was about to e and see him. I think Armand had a great respect and a sincere affection for his father. Marguerite expressed her truly feeling to Armand which moved Armand. She said that in the summer they will go to the country, not to a house like that, but to a house just big enough for two people. She said she did not want to drive her back into the life she had to lead once. Armand could not answer .Tears of gratitude and love filled his eyes, and he flung himself into Marguerite’s arms. I think it was possible to resist such devotion.
Then they t back joyously to Bougival, talking over their projects for the future, which, thanks to their heedlessness, and especially to their love, then saw in the rosiest light. Bur when his father arrived, he let Armand left Marguerite. His father wanted to pel him to do so and tried his best to persuade Armand.
Armand felt that his father would be right if it had been any other woman. Armand loved Marguerite so deeply. He was convinced that he was wrong with regard to Marguerite, Nevertheless, the tone in which his father said those last words was so kind. At last, he said he can’t leave her.
Then Armand and Marguerite spent the whole day in talking their projects for the future, as if they felt the need of realizng them as quickly as possible.
Because Armand insisted to love Marguerite, so his father found Marguerite and asked her to leave his son. Armand’s sister was to marry the man whom she loved; she entered an honorable family, which requires that Armand’s family had to be no less honorable. The family of the man who was to bee his little sister’s husband had learned what manner of life Armand was leading in Pairs, and had declared to me that the marriage must be broken off if Armand continues this life.
For his family’s reputation, Marguerite agreed to leave Armand. She felt that it was her duty because she loved Armand so much to do this even though it meant giving up her own happiness and hurting Armand temporarily. She reluctantly returned to her former life knowing that some day Armand would forgive her. However, Armand didn’t know anything about this conversation. So when he knew Marguerite left him, he felt angry and decided to revenge her.
Armand didn’t know all things were misunders tanding. And at that time, Marguerite was ill and might die of this illness. Marguerite had a wish; she hoped she could saw Armand again before she dies. But it is a pity that Armand didn’t visit her. Soon, Marguerite dies. When Armand knew the truth, he felt very regret and very sad. Through Marguerite’s dies he knew how deep about Marguerite’s love
I remembered a saying: “Women are like the flowers”. Those pretty women are like those beautiful flowers. It seems that beautiful women always have tragic endings.. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things. Through this novel, we can see how difficult about the love between Armand and Marguerite.
As the book said that, there are two ways to pursuit women. One is money, the other is love. At that time, Armand had some money, but it was not enough to pay for Marguerite. So love is the only way to pursuit Marguerite. He not only made Marguerite to be his mistress, but also made her believed that it was the true love between them.
Maybe because Marguerite was a prostitute, she valued emotion more. To be loved by a pure young girl, to be the first to reveal to her the strange mystery of love, is indeed a great happiness. She considered Armand’s love as the true love, and she didn ’t hesitate anything, even though dedicating all things. But faced of the Marguerite’s love, Armand had always refused ro believe that prostitutes will have true love. His suspicion occupied his mind, and the third day he recognized Margaret deceived him and made a humiliation. Under the action of vanity, he immediately regretted.
So we can believe that, in the heart of Armand, vanity was more important than love. Maybe the true thing that he really wanted was the posses of a debutante, not an ordinary women ’s love. As Marguerite said that they had no friends, and they had selfish lovers who spent fortunes, riot on them, as they said, but on their own vanity. People always said, “True love often can make the person better ”. Armand did not became better, but became more corrupted. In addition to enjoy the vanity and happiness, he spent the whole day to waste money. He did not recognize that the money was actually from several men’s supports. He never thought of how to make Marguerite live in a normal life. We can see clearly that Armand ’s love was so insignificant.
In contrast with that, the true love made Marguerite became sublime. She determined to abandon all vanity and luxury, and lived a new life with Armand. She wanted to say goodbye to the past, and rented a quiet house far away from the dusty in society. We can not deny that Armand was really loved Margaret, but he did not believe that Margaret really loved him. His heart was full of hatred, full of hate. Of course, we also had to admit that, Armand was still loved Margaret, although the way that he expressed his love was not right. He can’t understand love pletely.
I think, if there are more sincerity and trust, less vanity and suspicion, perhaps there will be a different ending.

La dame aux CaméliasW
Recently , I read the famous book written by French writer Alexandre Dumas, fils, which is called La dame aux Camélias .It is French name of it and you also can call it The Lady of the Camellias. And I got a lot from it and I want to share my feeling about it.
The whole story is about Marguerite, who is a kept womon in Paris in the mid of 1800s . After meeting Armand
Duval ,Marguerite fell in love with the young man and even tried to flee from her questionable past ,so they left Paris and led a peaceful life. But the father of Armand thought it was a insult to let his son marry with the kept woman,so he t to Marguerite and pleaded with her for the reputation of Armand and his little daught . At that time Marguerite also realized it was the right way to love her lover, so she t back to Paris, the past life ,and at last because of the illness ,she died in heavy debts and the regret that she did not meet her lover.
Yeah , that is whole story .After that ,Armand knew the fact why Marguerite left him and he told Dumas the story. Dumas repeated emphasizing it was a true story, but as for me it just makes no difference and I really love that story .
So, at first ,I want to talk about the main role ---Marguerite. development in order to protect a host of attractions and historical sites, as well as to maintain the economic vitality of the downtown area. Figure 5.1-5 figure 5.1.4 Washington mass transit network to support implementation of effective transport demand management policies to reduce urban traffic congestion and public transport priority was in the early 1960 of the 20th century by the planners first proposed in Paris, France, and in Europe and other major cities to operate has been the formation of the rich content system. After reading the book, you can definitely feel the preference of the auther, for example “It will seem absurd to many people ,but
I have an unbounded sympathy for women of this kind and I do not think it necessary to apologize for such sympathy.”And
another thing is doubtless is that she was beautiful beyond words. Dumas described her as follow: Excessively tall and thin ,she had in the fullest degree the art of repairing this oversight of Nature by the mere arrangement of the things she wore. Two black eyes ,cheeks of rosy hue, teeth white as snow and all the beautiful clothes she had on made she perfect. That was also the reason she was so popular at that time. What moved me most is that her attitude toward the loved and the hated. When Comte de N asked her to be her lover, and she knew she could get a lot from her ,but she refused. And when she fell in love with Armand ,she tried to sell her belongings with a loss of more than 20 thousand francs only to want to live with her. But she was like a man who is addicted to drugs, she could not quit the luxurious life and she loved Armand so much ,so she could not avoid the tragic ending.
The second role impressed me should be Armand, who is also the main role of the story. To some extent, I do not like that guy and in some ways ,I think he should take the responsibility of the tragic ending of Marguerite. At first, after getting his development in order to protect a host of attractions and historical sites, as well as to maintain the economic vitality of the downtown area. Figure 5.1-5 figure 5.1.4 Washington mass transit network to support implementation of effective transport demand management policies to reduce urban traffic congestion and public transport priority was in the early 1960 of the 20th century by the planners first proposed in Paris, France, and in Europe and other major cities to operate has been the formation of the rich content system. certification , he did not return home but rented a house and got a woman with the 8000 francs from his father.
And meeting Marguerite ,he fell in love with the beauty of her. Just as words said, you can use two things to win a woman of that kind : one is money, the other is love. But more than 100 thousand francs that Marguerite would spend for a year, which was too much for him to afford, so he decided to take advantage of the last alternative. So he kept visiting Marguerite asking about her health, which gave Marguerite a good impression. Even the kept women got money by trading their bodies ,but that also made them more treasure love. So when Marguerite thought what Armand offered her to be love, she gave him all she had with soul and heart.
But I feel Armand was an unpleasant lover. At first ,when they were in Paris, he never gave her any trust or understanding, all he had done was taking and mistrusting. And he also prided himself on making the most beautiful woman as his lover and that was why he came to ask for her forgiveness after he realized that relationship cost him nothing but benefits. Even after he and Marguerite left Paris and lived in the country, he did not trust her and suspect her of having something with other men, which made much unpleasantness . And after living with her ,he did not development in order to protect a host of attractions and historical sites, as well as to maintain the economic vitality of the downtown area. Figure 5.1-5 figure 5.1.4 Washington mass transit network to support implementation of effective transport demand management policies to reduce urban traffic congestion and public transport priority was in the early 1960 of the 20th century by the planners first proposed in Paris, France, and in Europe and other major cities to operate has been the formation of the rich content system. get a real job but lived with her money---what he thought was dirty, and he even t to gamble. And when Marguerite wrote him a letter and returned to Paris ,he chose to trust his father’s
words, and thought she left because she minded his poverty, and did not tried to figure out the reasons . And to save his face ,he even wrote a letter filled with insulted words to her. Just as Marguerite said , he wanted to maintain the rich life that Marguerite led and he did not trust that she would not share his poverty and sorrow. To some degree, in that love affair, he was not just that serious, and even without the interference of his father or her illness, he would leave her after he got tired of her . I think it is the death of Marguerite perfect their love.
But we have to accept the fact that Armand loved Marguerite, or he would not be so jealous when he knew her slept with other men and he would be not willing to give up all he had in Paris and go to the country with her, or he would not even reject his old father’s demand .Even we do not the love contained how much curiosity and how much true love towards him, but we can make sure that he loved Marguerite. But he was too young to understand what love was and how to make love work well, he did not know how to treat his beautiful lover. He thought staying with her was loving her, so he lost her.

And then I want to talk about the old duke. I do not want to judge what kind of person he was, but he is the important role. After losing her daughter, he met Marguerite who took after his daughter. That liked a fate .That old duke took nothing from her but offer her a lot of help when she was ill and when she needed money. He even offered her an opportunity of saying goodbye to her past life. But he was so nice that Marguerite could hurt him or take advantage of him. And Marguerite also did not like being controlled, so even with such a nice rich man to help, she died miserably.
And there was also an Prudence, who used to be a kept woman. She was not popular any longer, so she bore her pany and tried to get things from her .For example ,she t to the duke for getting money for Marguerite, but then she “borrowed”
500 francs from her and she would never returned it. And impressed me most was that she kept praising Marguerite’s

by nature. He loved his son and he wanted his son to own a good reputation and prospect, and he just did not realize that Marguerite really loved his son .But he did make a mistake. It was not the fault of Marguerite but his son. Even there were not Marguerite, there was also another woman in his life. And the whole story seemed to me that Marguerite helped Armand a lot ,she taught him how to love and how to treat life. But Armand was so into the colorful life that that decided that he could not have a successful career.
Actually, that story remind me of a Chinese story named Du Shi niang. But Marguerite was luckier than Shi niang ,at least Armand truly loved her. But to Shi niang ,she was sold by her lover, and after knowing what her lover did ,she jumped into river and was drowned.
And this story can be regarded as Dumas’ story. In 1884,
Dumas fell in love with the popular kept woman Mary in Paris. Mary was from a poor family and to make a living, she was reduced to a kept woman . She cherished the relationship with Dumas but she had to contact with the rich people. After knowing that, Dumas broke up with her and left Paris. But when he came back ,he only found out that Mary died at the young age of tty three. To memory her, he wrote that story. soon became a hit and it later was adopted as a script, and the play and movie which were based on the story also won big fame.
And in that story we can find out that love was heavily affected by money , and we can not deny that in the society where money es first ,our love affairs especially marriage are largely depended on how much money you have. For example, when two people begins a relationship, they will at the first place think about his or her possessions. It is so sad and shameful to know that even a kept woman know to treasure her love. So I hope that all young people can follow their heart and find the half that they truly love rather than find the rich people that they do not love deep down.

The Reading Report of Camille
I read Camille this semester. I was deeply moved by the main character Marguerite Gautier. Camille was written by Alexander Dumas, it was a woman, in Paris in the mid 1800's, and how she falls in love with a young man, Armand Duval, and then tries to escape from her questionable past.
Unfortunately, it es back to haunt her and she ends up returning to that life and dies painfully and alone, but with the knowledge that she was a noble woman at heart. When M. Duval, Armand's father, came to her,
pleading for her to leave Armand to save both Armand's reputation and that of his younger innocent sister, Marguerite saw a way to bee pure of heart, if not in body. She had her journal sent to Armand after her death, explaining why she had made the choice she had.
When I first began to read the book, I did not care for Marguerite of her attitude of lifestyle, but as I got further into the narrative, I realized that her saucy attitude was a front to cover the lonely woman that she really was. I think Dumas's last few lines about Marguerite being the exception, not the rule were quite true, and I also agreed with his view that while her lifestyle could not be condoned, we as a society assume that all of these type of women are cold and heartless, while this may not
always be the case. A person can make the wrong choices in life when they are young, and try to redeem themselves, but sometimes past situations prevent them from changing their lives, even though they desperately wish to do so. This applies to both men and women in many different types of circumstances: involvement in crime; drug or alcohol abuse; gambling; prostitution; financial problems; poor marriage choices; etc. And this is the fact, which exists in the whole society.
