Almost every day, we discuss the topic of health, especially for kids. But what is health? “Health” means eating well, getting enough exercise, and having a healthy weight. Let’s read the following rules. They can help you stay healthy.
We all know that eating fruit and vegetables can help us stay healthy, but many of us only eat our favorite food. Remember that we can only get the nutrition (营养 ) we need by eating different kinds of food, especially fruit and vegetables.
(2). Drink water and milk most often. Everyone knows that water is important. Besides that, kids need plenty of calcium (钙 ) to grow strong bones, and milk is rich in it. Every day, you should drink at least three cups of milk, when you are 9 years old or older. Y ou should also try to have less sugary drinks, like soda and coca. They include a lot of sugar. Sugar only includes calories (热量 ), not important nutrition.
(3). Listen to your body. When you are eating, notice how your body feels. When your stomach feels fortably full, stop eating. Eating too much makes you feel unfortable. If you do it too often, it can make you unhealthy and fat.
(4). Limit screen time. What’s screen time? It’s the amount of time you
spend watching TV, movies and playing puter games. The more time you spend on these sitting-down activities, the less time you spend playing sports, like basketball, and doing other activities like riding and swimming. Try to spend no more than 2 hours a day on screen time.

In some ways, the United States has made some progress. Fires no longer destroy 18,000 buildings as they did in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, or kill half a town of 2,400 people, as they did the same night in Peshtigo, Wisconsin. Other than the Beverly Hill Supper Club fire in Kentucky in 1977, it has been four decades since more than 100 Americans died in a fire.
But even with such successes, the United States still has one of the worst fire death rates in the world. Safety experts say the problem is neither money nor technology, but the indifference(无所谓 ) of a country that just will not take fires seriously enough.
American fire departments are some of the world's fastest and best-equipped. They have to be. The United States has twice Japan's population, and 40 times as many fires. It spends far less on preventing fires than on fighting them. And American fire -safety lessons are aimed almost entirely at children, who die in large numbers in fires but who, against popular beliefs, start very few of them.
Experts say the error is an opinion that fires are not really anyone's fault. That is not so in other countries, where both public education and the law treat fires as either a personal failing or a crime(罪行 ). Japan has many wood houses; of the 48 fires in world history that burned more than 10,000
buildings, Japan has had 27. Punishment for causing a big fire can be as severe as life imprisonment.
In the United States, most education dollars are spent in elementary schools. But, the lessons are aimed at too limited a number of people; just 9 percent of all fire deaths are caused by children playing with matches. The United States continues to depend more on technology than laws or social pressure. There are smoke detectors in 85 percent of all homes. Some local building laws now require home sprinklers (喷水装置 ). New heaters and irons shut themselves off if they are tipped.
( )30. The reason why so many Americans die in fires is that _____.
A. they took no interest in new technology
B. they did not pay great attention to preventing fires
C. they showed indifference to fighting fires
D. they did not spend enough money on fire equipment
( )31. It can be inferred from the passage that______.
A. fire safety lessons should not be aimed only at American children
B. American children have not received enough education of fire safety lessons
C. Japan is better equipped with fire equipment than the United States
D. America's large population leads to more fires
( )32. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?
A. There has been no great fire in the USA in recent 40 years that leads to high death rate.
B. There have been several great fires in the USA in recent 40 years that lead to high deathrate.
C. There has been only one great fire in the USA in recent 40 years that led to high deathrate.
D. The fire in Kentucky in 1977 made only a few people killed. (D)

What is your favorite color? Do Y ou like yellow, orange or red? If you do, you must be an optimist, a leader, an active person who enjoys life, people and excitement. Do you prefer grays and blues? Then you are probably quiet, shy and you would rather follow than lead. If you love green, you are strong-minded and, determined. Y ou wish to succeed and want other people to see you are successful. At least this is what a psychologist tells us, and they should know, because they have been seriously studying the meaning of color preference, and the effect that colors have on human beings. They tell us that we don ’ t choose our favorite color as we grow up. If
you
happen to love brown, you did so as soon as you opened your eyes, or at least as you could see clearly.
A yellow room makes us feel more cheerful and more fortable than a dark green one, and a red dress brings warmth and cheer to the saddest winter day, On the other hand, black is depressing(沮丧 ). Light and bright colors make people not only happier but more active. It is a fact that factory workers work better, harder, and have fewer accidents when their machines are painted orange rather than black or dark gray .
Remember, then, that if you feel low, you can always brighten your day or your life with a new shirt or a few colorful things. Remember also that you will know your friends and your enemies better when you find out what colors they like and dislike. And don’ t forget that anyone can guess a lot about your character when you choose 8 handkerchiefs or a lamp-shade.

Dear Dr. Helper,
I am a Senior 1 student. I am now in great need of your help because I can hardly stand the great pressure. Every day I have to stay at school for nine hours to have lessons and spend at least three to four hours doing my homework at home. We teenagers are eager to play and enjoy ourselves, but we hardly have any time to do what we want. Besides, we even do not have enough sleep.
There seems to be three causes about overload: the pressure of examinations, too much homework and the high expectation from the parents. We are often warned that if we do not do our best, we will not have the chance to go to university.
I write this letter only to wish that I could have someone to talk to. I am looking forward to your advice.
Y our sincerely,
Wang Yong

Cars are lots of fun, but they could also be dangerous. We have to be careful when we drive them or ride in them.
It's always a good idea to put on your seat belt when you're in a car. Why? Think about this example: You put an egg on a skateboard and give it a push. If the skateboard hits a stone, it will stop, but the egg won't. It will fly through the air, hit the ground and break.
Now, think what would happen if you tied the egg to the skateboard. When the skateboard hits a stone, the egg won't go flying; it will stay safely on the skateboard.
V olvo, a famous Swedish carmaker, was the first to use seat belts in 1849.
Air bags are also very important for car safety, because sometimes a seat belt isn't enough. If the car is going really fast and runs into something, seat belts could even hurt the people who wear
3
them. Most new cars have air bags in front of and next to the seats. When a car hits something, its air bags will e out quickly in less than one second to keep the people inside safe.
41. The passage mainly tells us
A. two important ways to keep safe in cars B. how air bags work to make cars safe
C. how seat belts work to make cars safe D. why we must tie the egg to the skateboard
.
A. tell us that eggs are easy to break B. show how to wear a seat belt
C. show why it's important to wear a seat belt in a car D. tell us what a skateboard is
43. Seat belts can make us safer because .
A. we are interested in them B. they can stop us from hitting other cars
C. they can help us stay safely on the seats D. they are made of strong materials
44. Air bags are important for cars because _.
A. they are made of plastic B. they can also help us to keep safe in a car
C. they can keep cars running slowly D. they are put in front of and next to the seats
45. Which of the following is TRUE according to this passage?
A. It won't be dangerous if there are seat belts or air bags in a car.
B. Now most of new cars still have only one air bag.
C. When a car hits something, its air bags will e out a few minutes later.
D. Volvo was the first to use seat belts.

Now satellites are helping to forecast(预报) the weather. They are in space, and they can reach any part of the world. The satellites take pictures of the atmosphere(大气) , because this is where the weather forms (形成) . They send these pictures to the weather stations. So meteorologists (气象学家) can see the weather of any part of the world. From the pictures, the scientists can often say how the weather will change.
Today , nearly five hundred weather stations in sixty countries receive satellite pictures. When they receive new pictures, the meteorologists pare (比较) them with earlier ones. Perhaps they may find that the clouds have changed during the last few hours. This may mean that the weather on the ground may soon change, too. In their next weather forecast, the meteorologists can say this.
So the weather satellites are a great help to the meteorologists. Before satellites were invented, the scientists could forecast the weather for about 24 or 48 hours. Now they can make good forecasts for three or five days. Soon, perhaps, they may be able to forecast the weather for a week or more ahead(提前) .

What do you want to be when you grow u p? A teacher? A doctor? How about an ice-cream taster?
Yes, there really is a job where you can get paid to taste ice cream. Just ask John Harrison an “Official Taste Tester” for the past 21 years. Testing helps manufacturers (制造商) to be sure of a product’s quality. During his career Harrison has been responsible for approving large quantities of the sweet ice cream— as well as for developing over 75 flavors (口味 ).
Some people think that it would be easy to do this job; after all, you just have to like ice cream, right? No —there’s more to the job than that, says Harrison, who has a degree in chemistry. He points out that a dairy or food-science degree would be very useful to someone wanting a career in this “cool” field.
In a typical morning on the job, Harrison tastes and assesses 60 ice cream samples. He lets the ice cream warm up to about 12℉. Harrison explains: “You get more flavor from warmer ice cream, which is why some kids like to stir (搅拌 cream soup.”
While the ice cream warms up, Harrison looks over the samples and grades each one its appearance. “Tasting begins with the eyes,” he explains. He checks to see if the ice cream is attractive and asks himself, “Dose the product have the color expected from that flavor?” Next it’s time to taste!
Continuing to think up new ideas, try out new flavors, and test samples from so many kinds of ice cream each day keeps Harrison busy but happy---working at one cool job.
44. What is John Harrison’s job?
A. An official. B. An ice-cream taster.
